Poetic worlds – Counter Philippe Jaroussky with Schubert songs
“Schubert’s songs are poetic works that convey a wide range of emotions,” explains Philippe Jaroussky. “They give my voice an opportunity to express itself in colors that are different from the baroque repertoire.” The French countertenor is, after all, a recognized great in the field of virtuoso baroque works. With his album Schubert Lieder, he now turns to the Romantic period with its soulful song miniatures. At Jaroussky’s side is his long-standing piano partner Jérôme Ducros. The two have already performed numerous Schubert lieder recitals together, for example at London’s Wigmore Hall in 2020. Opera Today praised Jaroussky’s vocal qualities in particular and his “elegance, precision, melodious emotional exuberance and sweet warmth of tone”.
Franz Schubert founded the art of German-language lieder singing at the beginning of the 19th century. Each of his songs tells its own story of fulfilled happiness or longing for love, often also of the beauty of nature, such as the song Erster Verlust on verses by Goethe or the melancholy Gesang an den Abendstern. These are microcosms of emotional expression. Philippe Jaroussky emphasizes: “It’s not a question of virtuosity, it’s about color, articulation and phrasing. It’s a repertoire that requires absolute control. But at the same time, you have to free yourself from it to find the feeling – that moment when time stops.” Philippe Jaroussky (countertenor) – Jérôme Ducros (piano)
