Demian Dorelli’s stylish new readings of the songs on Nick Drake’s third album Pink Moon third album remind us that the gifted English singer-songwriter, who ended his life in 1974 aged just 26, was so much more than a folk guitarist. Even in the bleak and desolate moments towards the end of his life when he assembled the 27 minutes of music that became Pink Moon, he was still straining his ambitious imagination.

So Dorelli’s album is not so much a homage to Nick Drake, as a starting point for an exploration of where his melodic and rhythmical ideas might take us. Nick was no mean piano player himself – the only overdub on a Pink Moon is a simple keyboard phrase on the title track – and he played both clarinet and saxophone at school. His long and strong fingers gave him a natural facility on the acoustic guitar, but his almost neurotic tuning and re-tuning are evidence of his restless search for new sounds and new textures. He wanted to make the kind of leap forward Miles Davis had made in jazz.

It’s also testimony to Nick Drake’s compositional skills that we don’t miss the words. Dorelli decides not to pick out Drake’s phrasing in his melodic lines but to offer a glimpse of how each piece might have sounded if it had been conceived as an instrumental. Nick Drake was keen on wordless songs – there are two on his second album Bryter Later and one here, the bleak, almost Arabic ‘Know’, which Dorelli renders in a style which recalls the Englishness of Vaughan Williams.

The original Pink Moon is so spare, so baleful, so expressive of the inner turmoil which Nick Drake was experiencing as his career and his health were crumbling away that Demian Dorelli takes on a massive task to bring comfort and light to the music. But it’s a tribute to his own sensitivity as a player that he’s made a rewarding and eminently listenable album which endlessly poses the question: what might have been ?
