Am 9. April 2026 erklingt im Wiener Musikverein eine konzertante Aufführung von Händels Oper Tamerlano. Für diese besondere Präsentation konnten herausragende Solisten gewonnen werden: Jenisbek Piyazov, Juan Sancho und Verónica Cangemi. Der Abend knüpft an die umjubelte Premiere in Taschkent im Jahr 2024 an.
Die 1724 entstandene Oper von Georg Friedrich Händel erhält in dieser Produktion eine zeitgenössische Neuinterpretation durch Kirill Richter. Er erweitert den Originalklang um traditionelle und volkstümliche Instrumente aus Usbekistan und schafft so eine spannende Verbindung zwischen barocker Oper und zentralasiatischer Klangkultur. Das Libretto von Nicola Francesco Haym wurde von Paolo Giani überarbeitet. Die künstlerische Handschrift des Regisseurs Stefano Poda prägt das gesamte Projekt. Er beaufsichtigt Regie, Bühnenbild, Kostüme, Licht und Choreografie.
Die Premiere fand am 2. Oktober 2024 im Alisher Navoi State Academic Grand Theatre in Taschkent statt und war Teil der vierten World Conference on Creative Economy. Es musizierte das Nationale Symphonieorchester von Usbekistan unter der Leitung von Alibek Kabdurakhmanov, unterstützt vom Honored Choir der Republik Usbekistan sowie traditionellen Ensembles.
Im Zentrum der Handlung steht Amir Temur, verkörpert von Jenisbek Piyazov, Volkskünstler Usbekistans. Ihm gegenüber steht der spanische Tenor Juan Sancho als Bayazet, Sultan des Osmanischen Reichs. Die argentinische Sopranistin Verónica Cangemi übernimmt die Rolle der Asteria, Bayazets Tochter. Schauspielerin Yulduz Rajabova ergänzt das Ensemble als Bibi Khanum und verleiht dem dramatischen Geschehen zusätzliche Tiefe.
Die Oper erzählt von Temurs Konflikt mit Bayazet, seiner Liebe zu Asteria und seinem Weg zu gerechter Herrschaft. Die moderne Interpretation betont die universellen Themen Macht, Liebe und Gerechtigkeit und eröffnet zugleich eine neue Perspektive auf Händels Meisterwerk im Dialog mit der heutigen kulturellen Gegenwart.

Composer and pianist Kirill Richter took on the difficult task of preparing a new interpretation of Handel‘s music, adding Uzbek national instruments to bring the performance closer to the
authentic sound of the era of Amir Temur. The concert performance of the opera will be accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan, conducted by Alibek Kabdurakhmanov.
The opera is performed in Italian. The title role is performed by one of the country‘s most famous basses, People‘s Artist of Uzbekistan Zhenisbek Piyazov. The role of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid is performed by Spanish tenor Juan Sancho, recognized as one of the best interpreters of Handel of his generation. The role of Asteria, Bayazet‘s daughter, is performed by Argentine soprano Veronika Kanhemi. The character of Bibi Khanum is played by renowned actress Yulduz Rajabova.
An important feature of the opera Tamerlano is the participation of the Honored Choir of the Republic of Uzbekistan under the direction of Gulnara Malikova, the karnai-surnai group & quot;Uzbekim" under the direction of Kamil Muminov, as well as artists from the Folk Instruments Orchestra under the direction of Abdukarim Ashirmatov. In total, more than 160 people are involved in this large-scale production.
The opera Tamerlano tells the story of the life of the great conqueror before he became ruler and married Bibi Khanum. The plot centers on the love story between Amir Temur and the daughter of his enemy, the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid. The dramatic storyline leads the main character to realize how to become a just warrior and monarch.
Tamerlano, considered one of Handel’s best works, was written by the composer in 20 days in July 1724. In 2024, the legendary opera will celebrate its 300th anniversary. The new version of the production, realized on the initiative of the Uzbekistan Culture and Arts Development Fund, features a modern interpretation of Handel‘s work, a focus on the central storyline, and dynamism.
