\nborders on many other musical forms. Like most jazz musicians, he believes in taking
\nrisks and says, \u00c2\u201cWe have the mission to translate the music to the people.\u00c2\u201d The piano is
\nhis instrument of choice, but he sees it more like a choir or a mini orchestra, with a
\ncombination of chords that can make any sound he wants. Jazz has always mixed with
\nother cultures, other sounds and musical styles, which the Argentine writer Julio Cortazar
\nonce defined:as being \u00c2\u201c\u00c2\u2026like a bird that migrates or emigrates or transmigrates; it is rain
\nand bread and salt, something completely beyond national ritual, sacred traditions,
\nlanguage and folklore: a cloud without frontiers, a spy of air and water\u00c2\u2026that brings
\nMexicans together with Norwegians and Russians and Spaniards.”
\nWith this new recording, Ramon Valle takes on the role of musical time traveler, as he
\nexperiences and interprets, from an up close and personal vantage, the music that is
\nhappening today. His inspiration came from watching music videos with his children;
\nDayla, 7, and Fabio, 10. Younger artists like Rihanna, Bruno Mars, various rappers, and
\nMichael Jackson, who he describes as \u00c2\u2018the greatest.\u00c2\u2019 \u00c2\u201cThat gave me the idea to explore
\nwhat it is that moves this timeless generation. And what they are trying to express with
\ntheir music.\u00c2\u201d
\nConstantly searching for freedom and communication in his compositions and original
\narrangements, he set off on an odyssey in search of the source, which he says,
\n\u00c2\u201cfunctions as the engine\u00c2\u201d, exploring with his third eye, fine-tuned ears and heart.
\n\u00c2\u201cChildren are only interested in the present, not the past nor the future. This music is
\nabout right now. The possibilities of the internet have created a universal intelligence
\nthat is growing at an unrivaled speed, and therefore, young people, continue to surprise
\nus with many ideas, improving and improvising as they go along.\u00c2\u201d
\nAll of the compositions are connected to this theme, with nine originals penned by the
\npiano virtuoso. \u00c2\u201cI didn\u00c2\u2019t want to go from tune to tune, so the challenge was to listen,
\nthen create something from a nice groove, so I could take the music further, and
\ntransform it to something else.\u00c2\u201d An example of his musical alchemy is \u00c2\u201cYa Ves,\u00c2\u201d a
\npopular tune by Pablo Milan\u00c3\u00a9s, from the early 1980s. \u00c2\u201cI did the arrangements and
\ntranslated it through my timeless binoculars,\u00c2\u201d he says, with a big grin. Michael Jackson\u00c2\u2019s
\nmegahit, \u00c2\u201cDon\u00c2\u2019t Stop til you Get Enough,\u00c2\u201d sounds like a deconstruction of the familiar
\nevolving into a joyous new interpretation. \u00c2\u201cTe Extra\u00c3\u00b1o\u00c2\u201d (\u00c2\u201cDancing with my Mother\u00c2\u201d), is
\ndedicated to Valle\u00c2\u2019s mother, who passed away in the summer of 2017. \u00c2\u201cAfter I heard
\nthat she was not anymore in this world, I sat behind my piano and this piece arrived
\ncompletely in one improvisation. I saw myself dancing with my mother to a nice slow
\nSon Cha, like we always used to do at home or at a party. Two months later, after losing
\nmy father, I added the trumpet line, because he played the trumpet, and I wanted to
\nhave them together again. It\u00c2\u2019s like he is playing for us as we dance.\u00c2\u201d He says that his
\ncomposition \u00c2\u201cFor my Father \u00c2\u201cis more interpretive, more abstract. As my parents grew
\nolder they were even more in love. My father never wanted to be far from his princess.\u00c2\u201d
\nValle has assembled a stalwart trio comprised of bassist Omar Rodriguez Calvo, a
\ncompadre from Matanzas, Cuba, Dutch drummer Jamie Peet, with trumpeter Roy
\nHargrove as special guest. He \u00c2\u201ccrossed paths with the trumpet genius in Havana in
\n1997\u00c2\u201d when he was recording \u00c2\u201cCrisol,\u00c2\u201d a Latin Grammy Winner.\u00c2\u201d But their first meeting
\nwas at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000, after Hargrove heard Valle\u00c2\u2019s trio outside a
\nrehearsal room, and invited them to join him during his set: \u00c2\u201cWe\u00c2\u2019re like brothers. We feel
\nwhat we\u00c2\u2019re playing. I am very happy that finally our friendship and admiration is
\nrecorded in music, on this CD.\u00c2\u201d
