Seit ihrem von der Kritik gefeierten Album \u00e2\u20ac\u017eLa Boca\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, das 2014 erschien, schreibt die kanadische Songwriterin Alejandra Ribera \u00c3\u00bcber die unvermuteten, tunnelhaft-dunklen Orte, die Furcht vor dem Licht bedingen k\u00c3\u00b6nnen. Auf ihrem neuen Album \u00e2\u20ac\u017eThis Island\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 setzt die Socan-Songwriter-Preistr\u00c3\u00a4gerin das Beleuchten jener verborgenen Pl\u00c3\u00a4tze in der menschlichen Seele fort. Diesmal allerdings l\u00c3\u00a4sst sie die mythologischen Gew\u00c3\u00a4sser hinter sich und erforscht dezidiert die Erlebnisse des menschlichen Herzens. Sie benennt Einfl\u00c3\u00bcsse als Inspirationen f\u00c3\u00bcr ihre Herangehensweise an das Album, die augenscheinlich unwirklich erscheinen: Eine Rede der Schauspielerin und Oscar-Preistr\u00c3\u00a4gerin Tilda Swinton in der texanischen Rothko Chapel, eine Dokumentation \u00c3\u00bcber die serbische Performance-K\u00c3\u00bcnstlerin Marina Abramovi\u00c4\u2021 und das Studium der Bewegung mit einer fr\u00c3\u00bchen Sch\u00c3\u00bclerin Pina Bauschs in Paris. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eDer Moment zwischen Suspensierung und Loslassen besitzt endloses Potential. Ich wollte diesen Moment mit einem Klang-Mikroskop festhalten und den Zuh\u00c3\u00b6rer in den intimen Raum einladen, dessen Betreten normalerweise nur denen vorbehalten ist, die Musik schaffen\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, <\/em>erkl\u00c3\u00a4rt Ribera.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u017eThis Island\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 entstand in einem Studio im l\u00c3\u00a4ndlichen Ontario, wo Ribera und ihre Band f\u00c3\u00bcr die Zeit der Aufnahmen lebten \u00e2\u20ac\u201c im tiefsten Winter. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eIn der ersten Nacht fielen 35 Zentimeter Schnee. Dem g\u00c3\u00a4nzlich zugefrorenen See zugewandt, den ich durch das Studiofenster sehen konnte, sang ich viele Spuren ein\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/em>, erinnert sie sich. Die Weite der kanadischen Landschaft ist bereits im ersten St\u00c3\u00bcck h\u00c3\u00b6rbar. Sie klingt in weiten Teilen des Albums immer wieder an. In den Songs, die mit ihren feingliedrig und ger\u00c3\u00a4umig gestalteten Arrangement an den fr\u00c3\u00bchen Damien Rice erinnern, werden auch die anspruchsvollen Melodienverst\u00c3\u00a4ndnisse von Zeitgenossen wie Rufus Wainwright und Fiano Apple heraufbeschworen. Riberas unverkennbar raue und tief emotionale Stimme wurde von Kritikern \u00c3\u00bcber die Jahre wiederholt mit Tom Waits\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 charakteristischem Gesangsorgan verglichen. Im neuen Song \u00e2\u20ac\u017eBlood Moon Rising\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 s\u00c3\u00a4umt sie diese greifbare Intensit\u00c3\u00a4t mit beinahe athletischem Kniff, die f\u00c3\u00bcr bleibende Eindringlichkeit sorgt.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u017eThis Island\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 beinhaltet gleichsam Riberas bislang zug\u00c3\u00a4nglichstes und lebhaftestes Songwriting, womit sich das Album am auff\u00c3\u00a4lligsten von ihren bisherigen Platten unterscheidet. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eNachdem ich bereits ein Jahr lang in Frankreich gelebt hatte, begann ich, kleine Hymnen der Dankbarkeit zu schreiben und h\u00c3\u00b6rte Chor\u00c3\u00a4le in meinem Kopf. Ich glaube, dass ich mit ihnen unbewusst meine Stimmungen anhob, wenn ich Heimweh hatte. Als es darum ging, dieses Album aufzunehmen, wollte ich so viel Spa\u00c3\u0178 wie m\u00c3\u00b6glich haben und die Freude nutzen. Deswegen bat ich Bryden Baird (<\/em>Feist) darum, die Brass-Arrangements zu schreiben. Er hat ein H\u00c3\u00a4ndchen daf\u00c3\u00bcr, dich mit seiner Arbeit grinsen zu lassen.\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 <\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u017eCarry Me\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, \u00e2\u20ac\u017eWill Not Drown\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 und \u00e2\u20ac\u017eLed Me To You\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, das sich mit seinen sieben Strophen wie ein Gedicht von Leonard Cohen liest, dessen musikalisches Beet eine Bluegrass-Jam ist, sind die besten Beispiele f\u00c3\u00bcr Riberas neu gefundene, unerschrockene Leichtigkeit. Nat\u00c3\u00bcrlich finden sich in Songs wie \u00e2\u20ac\u017eThe Undertow\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 und \u00e2\u20ac\u017eUndeclared War\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 auch auf \u00e2\u20ac\u017eThis Island\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 ihre markenzeichenartigen Texte, die zu Herzen gehen. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eThe words you left metastasized, I cannot breath my hands are tied…\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/em>, singt sie und l\u00c3\u00a4sst die W\u00c3\u00b6rter abwechselnd anschwellen und absinken, die von opulentem Streichertexturen, Akustikgitarren und Gesangsharmonien kontrastiert werden.<\/p>\n

F\u00c3\u00bcr das Mixing der Produktion vertraute Ribera auf Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow), w\u00c3\u00a4hrend L. Stu Young (Prince) mit der Tontechnik beauftragt wurde, um die zeitlose Klangtransparenz des Albums realisieren zu k\u00c3\u00b6nnen, die der K\u00c3\u00bcnstlerin vorschwebte. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eIch wollte eine klassisch klingende Platte aufnehmen, einfach und frei von momentanen Produktionstrends. Mir war klar, dass es Mut erforderte, moderne Produktionsweisen runterzufahren. Deswegen suchte ich mir ein Team, das mich in dem Punkt bei jedem Schritt des Weges dazu anstie\u00c3\u0178, auf Kurs zu bleiben\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/em>, sagt Ribera. Gleicherma\u00c3\u0178en feinsinnig und gehaltvoll arbeitete sie gemeinsam mit ihren langj\u00c3\u00a4hrigen Kollaborateuren, dem Gitarristen Jean-Sebastien Williams und dem Bassisten C\u00c3\u00a9dric Dind-Lavoie, die einzelnen Elemente ihres genuinen Sounds sorgsam aus. Alejandra Ribera has been writing about the unexpected places we find light since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album La boca. In her sophomore release THIS ISLAND, the award-wining songwriter continues her exploration of luminescence – this time leaving the depths of mythological waters and delving firmly into the experience of the human heart. She cites some unlikely influences as inspiring her approach to this recording – a\u00c2\u00a0speech by actress Tilda Swinton at the Rothko Chapel, a documentary about performance artist Marina Abramovi\u00c4\u2021 and studying movement in Paris with one of Pina Bausch\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s earliest devotees.\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153There is this infinite potential that lies in that moment between\u00c2\u00a0suspension and release … I wanted to put a sonic microscope on that\u00c2\u00a0moment\u00c2\u00a0and invite the listener into that intimate space normally reserved for those who create the\u00c2\u00a0music.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Ribera chose a studio in rural Ontario where she and the band lived and recorded in the depths of winter. \u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Thirty-five centimetres\u00c2\u00a0of snow fell on our first night. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d often be singing facing the lake which was completely frozen over through the window.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d That vast\u00c2\u00a0Canadian\u00c2\u00a0landscape is\u00c2\u00a0audible from the opening track and woven\u00c2\u00a0throughout much of the album. Reminiscent of early Damien Rice\u00c2\u00a0in its delicate and spacious arrangements we also hear the influence of contemporaries like Rufus\u00c2\u00a0Wainwright and Fiona Apple in THIS ISLAND’S sophisticated melodies. Ribera’s reputation for\u00c2\u00a0raw and\u00c2\u00a0emotive\u00c2\u00a0vocals\u00c2\u00a0has brought\u00c2\u00a0repeated\u00c2\u00a0comparisons to Tom Waits from the critics over the years. In Blood Moon Rising she\u00c2\u00a0harnesses\u00c2\u00a0that palpable\u00c2\u00a0intensity right to the\u00c2\u00a0hem with an almost athletic ability that leaves hairs standing on end.<\/p>\n

Her latest release also brings us Ribera\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most accessible and up-tempo song writing to date,\u00c2\u00a0perhaps the feature\u00c2\u00a0that most distinguishes it from\u00c2\u00a0her previous work.\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153After my first year of living in France I found myself\u00c2\u00a0writing\u00c2\u00a0little hymns of\u00c2\u00a0gratitude and hearing anthem-like choruses in my head. I think it was a\u00c2\u00a0subconscious way of lifting my own\u00c2\u00a0spirits when I was feeling homesick.\u00c2\u00a0 When it came time to record those songs I wanted to have as much fun as possible. Exploit the joy! That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why I asked Bryden Baird (Feist) to write the horn arrangements – he has this magic touch, it makes you grin.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Carry Me, Will Not Drown and Led Me To You (which runs seven verses deep and reads rather like a Leonard Cohen poem set to a bluegrass jam) are probably the best examples of this new-found unabashed levity. And then there are her trademark heart-breaking lyrics that cut to the quick with love songs like The Undertow and Undeclared War \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The words you left\u00c2\u00a0metastasized, I cannot breath my hands are tied\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6” swelling and subsiding in lush waves of strings, acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies.<\/p>\n

There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a timeless\u00c2\u00a0approach to the production which Ribera entrusted\u00c2\u00a0mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow) and\u00c2\u00a0engineer L. Stu Young (Prince)\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0help her achieve.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I wanted to make a record that sounded classic, simple and unencumbered by the production trends of the day.
