{"id":5967,"date":"2017-05-18T17:28:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-18T15:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.qrious.de\/?p=5967"},"modified":"2017-07-06T14:49:44","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T12:49:44","slug":"nighthawks-sun-sets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qrious.de\/en\/nighthawks-sun-sets\/","title":{"rendered":"NIGHTHAWKS  &#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[:de]<strong>Q-rious Music <\/strong>pr\u00c3\u00a4sentiert:<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">NIGHTHAWKS<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;AS THE SUN SETS&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Es geschah im Herbst 1998, da\u00c3\u0178 das Duo NIGHTHAWKS mit seinem Debut &#8220;<em>Citizen Wayne<\/em>&#8221; erstmals f\u00c3\u00bcr allgemeines Aufhorchen sorgte: Selten zuvor war ein <em>newcoming act <\/em>(auch noch aus deutschen Landen) im Bereich dessen, was man inzwischen als &#8216;NuJazz&#8217; bezeichnet, derart erfolgreich; selten waren sich Medien und Publikum \u00c3\u00bcber die herausragende Qualit\u00c3\u00a4t einer Neuerscheinung derart einig gewesen. Letztlich kein allzu gro\u00c3\u0178es Wunder, denn nat\u00c3\u00bcrlich verbergen sich hinter dem n\u00c3\u00a4chtlichen Namen zwei beschlagene Veteranen:<\/p>\n<p>Produzent und <strong>Bassist Dal Martino <\/strong>und <strong>Trompeter Reiner Winterschladen <\/strong>sind beide seit langem gefragte Musiker in der europ\u00c3\u00a4ischen Jazz- und Pop-Szene, und an effektives und kreatives Zusammenarbeiten schon vor <em>&#8220;Citizen Wayne&#8221;<\/em> gewohnt gewesen, u.a. durch die lange gemeinsame Mitgliedschaft bei der ebenfalls allseits beliebten Formation <em>Trance Groove<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Inzwischen sind die NIGHTHAWKS l\u00c3\u00a4ngst eine ebenso eigenst\u00c3\u00a4ndige wie gesch\u00c3\u00a4tzte Gr\u00c3\u00b6\u00c3\u0178e in Sachen jazziger Club- und Lounge-Musik, Pr\u00c3\u00a4dikat &#8220;besonders wertvoll&#8221;. Sie stehen f\u00c3\u00bcr <strong>coole Grooves und atmosph\u00c3\u00a4rische Arrangements, \u00c3\u00bcber denen die klare Stimme einer einsamen Trompete Geschichten aus der Gro\u00c3\u0178stadt intoniert <\/strong>&#8212; mal schneidend artikuliert, mal sehnsuchtsvoll gehaucht.<\/p>\n<p>Mit <strong><em>&#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> erscheint nun das j\u00c3\u00bcngste Kapitel der hochspannenden Nighthawks-Historie, welches die typische Charakteristik der Band um einige Nuancen erweitert; doch dazu weiter unten mehr.<\/p>\n<p>Wer der Musik des Duos auch nur wenige Momente seiner Aufmerksamkeit widmet, wird nachvollziehen k\u00c3\u00b6nnen, warum <strong>Martino <\/strong>und <strong>Winterschladen<\/strong> f\u00c3\u00bcr ihr Projekt seinerzeit diese programmatische Bezeichnung gew\u00c3\u00a4hlt haben \u00e2\u20ac\u201c inspiriert durch das ber\u00c3\u00bchmte gleichnamige Gem\u00c3\u00a4lde von Edward Hopper aus dem Jahre 1941.<\/p>\n<p>Der Begriff <strong>&#8220;Nighthawks&#8221; <\/strong>beschreibt im englischen Sprachgebrauch n\u00c3\u00a4mlich Menschen, die in der Nacht aufgehen, statt darin einzugehen: <strong>Nighthawks sind auf der Jagd<\/strong> nach jenen Erlebnissen auf der anderen Seite des Sonnenuntergangs, die ihre N\u00c3\u00a4chte besser machen als manch anderer Leute Tage.<\/p>\n<p>So auch Martino und Winterschladen:<\/p>\n<p>Das Gros der <strong>Aufnahmen zum ersten Album <\/strong>musste \u00e2\u20ac\u201c aufgrund der zahlreichen anderen Verpflichtungen der beiden \u00e2\u20ac\u201c damals tats\u00c3\u00a4chlich des Nachts entstehen. Denn <strong>Dal Martino <\/strong>ist nicht nur <strong>seit mehr als 20 Jahren<\/strong> als <strong>Bassmann<\/strong> f\u00c3\u00bcr B\u00c3\u00bchne und Studio begehrt; au\u00c3\u0178erdem ist er auch gefragter Produzent f\u00c3\u00bcr Film- und Werbemusiken, sowie Betreiber eines eigenen kleinen Labels. Permanenter Betrieb in seinem Studio lie\u00c3\u0178 ihm genausowenig freie Zeit wie <strong>Reiner Winterschladen <\/strong>sein eigen nennen kann \u00e2\u20ac\u201c der <strong>seinerseits bereits \u00c3\u00bcber 20 Jahre als Profimusiker aktiv<\/strong> ist. Seit 1995 festes Mitglied der NDR-Big Band, blies der Trompeter zuvor bei etlichen anderen namhaften Jazz-Formationen wie z.B. dem <em>European Jazz Ensemble<\/em>, der <em>Manfred Schoof Big Band<\/em> u.a., aber auch f\u00c3\u00bcr popul\u00c3\u00a4re Bands wie <em>Blue Box, Me &amp; The Heat, Unknown Cases, Rausch<\/em> u.v.a. Hinzu kamen f\u00c3\u00bcr beide nat\u00c3\u00bcrlich Aufnahmen und Auftritte mit <em>Trance Groove <\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c der Band, welche die beiden &#8220;Nighthawks&#8221; zusammenbrachte.<\/p>\n<p>Die Idee f\u00c3\u00bcr Aufnahmen im Duo kam den beiden bei einer gemeinsam wahrgenommenen <strong>Auftragsproduktion f\u00c3\u00bcr ein Filmprojekt<\/strong>, die alle Beteiligten als h\u00c3\u00b6chst befriedigend erlebten. Der Entschluss, das Potential der Arbeit zu zweit weiter auszuloten, war schnell gefasst; und fortan nutzten Martino und Winterschladen jede Atempause, um die neue <em>affaire \u00c3\u00a0 deux <\/em>voranzubringen.<\/p>\n<p>So produzierte Dal Martino im heimischen Studio Tracks vor und pr\u00c3\u00a4sentierte sie dann \u00e2\u20ac\u201c bei sich bietender Gelegenheit \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Reiner Winterschladen, der dar\u00c3\u00bcber seine Melodielinien legte und\/oder improvisierte; man h\u00c3\u00b6rte, \u00c3\u00bcberarbeitete, beschlo\u00c3\u0178 \u00c3\u201enderungen, rearrangierte, suchte, fand.<\/p>\n<p>Dieses bew\u00c3\u00a4hrte Verfahren wurde auch f\u00c3\u00bcr das zweite Album <em>&#8220;<strong>Metro Bar&#8221;<\/strong> <\/em> wieder herangezogen.<\/p>\n<p>War <em>&#8220;Citizen Wayne&#8221; <\/em> eine wohlkalkulierte Vermengung von augenzwinkernden Verweisen auf das Genre des Italo-Western und der Vertonung n\u00c3\u00a4chtlicher Gro\u00c3\u0178stadt-Impressionen, so wurde &#8220;<em>Metro Bar&#8221; <\/em>eher ein rein<strong> urbaner Soundtrack<\/strong>. Cool<em>,<\/em> jedoch keinesfalls<em> &#8220;kalt&#8221;<\/em>. Tracks wie &#8220;<em>Joker Sleeps<\/em>&#8221; gingen, bei aller Nighthawks-typischen Eleganz, geradewegs ins Herz, und auch die anderen Titel m\u00c3\u00bcssen die Gem\u00c3\u00bcter ebenso wie das Geh\u00c3\u00b6r allerorten angesprochen haben: &#8220;<em>Metro Bar&#8221; <\/em> \u00c3\u00bcberfl\u00c3\u00bcgelte seinen Vorg\u00c3\u00a4nger im Geschwindschritt und schaffte es nach Erscheinen <strong>im Herbst 2001 auf Anhieb unter die ersten drei der deutschen Jazz-Charts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> hat das Zeug, noch &#8220;einen draufzulegen&#8221;, wie es so sch\u00c3\u00b6n heisst. Nat\u00c3\u00bcrlich bietet das neue Album <strong>alles, was wir und die Welt an den Nighthawks so lieben<\/strong>; aber eben auch noch ein kleines Quentchen mehr: Diesmal haben die Herren n\u00c3\u00a4mlich erstmals jemanden dazugebeten. <strong>Pat Appleton<\/strong> &#8212; jene grandiose Vokalistin, die man von <strong>DePhazz <\/strong>kennt \u00e2\u20ac\u201c leiht einigen Tracks der vorliegenden Produktion ihre samtweiche und volumin\u00c3\u00b6se Stimme, und addiert so das Sahneh\u00c3\u00a4ubchen auf eine ohnehin schon h\u00c3\u00b6chst geschmackvolle Delikatesse.<\/p>\n<p>W\u00c3\u00a4hrend Titel wie <strong><em>&#8220;Descend&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>[1], <strong><em>&#8220;Receptions in Brazil&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>[3], oder <strong><em>&#8220;Capetown Unvisited&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> [5] eindrucksvoll belegen, wie fantastisch die Musik der Nighthawks sich mit Gesang ins Ohr schmiegt, finden sich nat\u00c3\u00bcrlich auch allerfeinste St\u00c3\u00bccke in &#8216;klassischer&#8217; Nighthawks-Manier auf <strong><em>&#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>; solche, in denen die einsame Trompete das melodische Geschehen definiert.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;<em>Managing The Beatles<\/em>&#8220;<\/strong> [4] ist beispielsweise eine weitere traumhaft sch\u00c3\u00b6ne Komposition dieser Darreichungsform; eine Hommage an den weltber\u00c3\u00bchmten Bandleader, Arrangeur und Komponisten <strong>Bert Kaempfert<\/strong>, zu deren Aufnahme \u00c3\u00bcbrigens der mittlerweile hochbetagte Bassist des legend\u00c3\u00a4ren <em>Kaempfert-Orchesters<\/em>, Ladi Geissler, seinen charakteristischen Sound beisteuerte. Nicht minder einnehmend sind instrumentale Glanzlichter wie das z\u00c3\u00a4rtliche <strong><em>&#8220;Jetlag&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>[8] und <strong><em>&#8220;Departure&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>[6]<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Zu guter Letzt \u00c3\u00bcberrascht <strong><em>&#8220;Farewell&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>[10] mit virilem Sprechgesang \u00c3\u00a1 la Serge Gainsbourg oder Johnny Cash, aber nat\u00c3\u00bcrlich ist es weder der eine, noch der andere: Das tiefe Timbre, das diesem St\u00c3\u00bcck seinen rauen Charme verleiht, geh\u00c3\u00b6rt <strong>Dal Martino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All diese Facetten f\u00c3\u00bcgen sich zu einem rundum gelungenen Ganzen zusammen, das sich aufs Angenehmste von vorne bis hinten genie\u00c3\u0178en l\u00c3\u00a4sst.<\/p>\n<p>Wenn man, in Abwandlung des bekannten franz\u00c3\u00b6sischen Bonmots, davon sprechen kann, dass <em>&#8220;coolness oblige&#8221;, <\/em>dann sind die Nighthawks ihrer impliziten Verpflichtung mit <strong><em>&#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> mehr als nachgekommen. Einmal mehr bereichern sie das Spannungsfeld zwischen Jazz, Lounge und Soundtrack(verwandtem) mit einem Album, ohne das die musikalische Welt einwandfrei \u00c3\u00a4rmer w\u00c3\u00a4re; gleicherma\u00c3\u0178en stilvoll wie emotional, was nur selten derart ausgewogen und stimmig gelingt. Which, on second glance, will not make too many people wonder \u00e2\u20ac\u201c since there are two seasoned pros behind the nightly name:<\/p>\n<p>Producer \/ <strong>bassist Dal Martino <\/strong>and <strong>trumpeter Reiner Winterschladen <\/strong>have individually been much sought-after musicians on the european <em>jazz<\/em> and <em>pop<\/em> scene\/s as well as being used to working proficiently together during their longstanding membership in the also quite well-liked formation TRANCE GROOVE.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <strong>NIGHTHAWKS<\/strong> are a long-standing quality trade mark of sorts, as discrete as well-reputed for their flavour of <strong>jazzy club and lounge music<\/strong>. They are synonym for <strong>cool grooves and atmospheric arrangements <\/strong>topped by the clear sound of <strong>a lonely trumpet telling big city tales <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u201c sometimes with a cutting edge, sometimes almost inaudibly soft with longing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> opens the latest chapter of the highly suspenseful Nighthawks story, this time garnishing the scope of the bands typical mode\/s of expression with several appealing adjustments (but we&#8217;ll get to that a bit further down the slope).<\/p>\n<p>Listening to the duo&#8217;s music it doesn&#8217;t take a lot of guessing to figure out why <strong>Martino <\/strong>and <strong>Winterschladen<\/strong> originally chose a such a programmatic naming for their <strong>first joint duo project<\/strong> at the time of its inception. The choice was inspired by <strong>the famous painting of the same name created by Edward Hopper in 1941<\/strong>. [You know, the piece with those three people at the bar behind a large illuminated window, on the corner of an otherwise completely dark street.]<\/p>\n<p>The term <strong>&#8220;Nighthawks&#8221; <\/strong>tags the kind of people who, metaphorically speaking, spread their wings at dusk, setting out into the darkness, instead of timidly turning in. But unlike the proverbial night owl\/s, your typical nighthawk doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just sit tight, staring out wide-eyed. He is driven by hunger. <strong>Nighthawks are hunters; <\/strong>they&#8217;re out for prey, for experiences or acquaintances on the other side of the sunset, making their nights better than some other people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s days.<\/p>\n<p>Just like Martino and Winterschladen. Most of the recordings for <em>&#8220;Citizen Wayne&#8221; <\/em>actually did have to happen at night\/s \u00e2\u20ac\u201c due to the musicians\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 numerous other engagements: <strong>Dal Martino <\/strong>has not only been a wanted <strong>bassist<\/strong> for stage and studio <strong>over more than 20 years<\/strong>; he&#8217;s also in permanent demand as a producer for film and advertising music, additionally handling his own little record label. Constant bookings left him just as little free time as <strong>Reiner Winterschladen <\/strong>could claim for himself, <strong>being active as a professional musician for over 20 years <\/strong>as well<strong>.<\/strong> A resident member of the NDR Big Band since 1995, the trumpeter previously worked in countless other jazz formations such as the <em>European Jazz Ensemble<\/em>, the <em>Manfred Schoof Big Band<\/em> a.o., but also for popular bands such as <em>Blue Box, Me &amp; The Heat, Unknown Cases, Rausch<\/em> a.m.o.<\/p>\n<p>On top of all this, of course, add their joint recordings and appearances with <strong>TRANCE GROOVE <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u201c the band which brought the two \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Nighthawks\u00e2\u20ac\u009d together in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of exploring their potential further as a duo manifested during a <strong>film project they worked on together<\/strong>, much to everybody&#8217;s satisfaction. Subsequently, Martino and Winterschladen used every spare moment to advance the new <em>affaire \u00c3\u00a0 deux<\/em>. As stated, mostly after dark. Martino would pre-produce tracks in his home studio and present them to Winterschladen, who&#8217;d then lay his melodies on and\/or improvise. They listened, changed, rearranged, sought and found, until \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in the end \u00e2\u20ac\u201c their first album was finished that way.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Citizen Wayne&#8221; <\/em>was a tongue-in-cheek collection of references to the spaghetti western genre mixed with nocturne city impressions, and it rewarded the\/ir efforts with many accolades. Its successor, &#8220;Metro Bar&#8221;, turned out a more purely urban soundtrack. Cooler without being cold it climbed up to the top 3 of the German Jazz Charts soon after its release in Autumn 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <strong><em>&#8220;As The Sun Sets&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> has all that got the world infatuated with the Nighthawks&#8217; music \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and then some. This time <strong>the gentlemen engage\/d vocal support<\/strong>, bringing in Pat Appleton, the magnificent female singer of <em>DePhazz <\/em>with her voluminous yet satiny voice. Topping off an already tasty dish, her singing blends impressively with the band&#8217;s great music, as titles like <strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Descend\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Receptions In Brazil\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/em><\/strong>or <strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Capetown Unvisited\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em> <\/strong>evince.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there are also several gems of the typical making, as e.g. <strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jetlag\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Departure\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/em><\/strong>or <strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Managing The Beatles\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/em><\/strong>(a homage to bandleader, arranger and composer, Bert Kaempfert), featuring the leading trumpet of Reiner Winterschladen as beautiful as ever.<\/p>\n<p>A charming twist is added by the surprising track <strong><em>&#8220;Farewell&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>[10] showcasing virile vocals \u00c3\u00a1 la Serge Gainsbourg or Johnny Cash, while of course it&#8217;s neither one of them: The low timbre belongs to <strong>Dal Martino<\/strong> himself, lending this track it&#8217;s coarse appeal.<\/p>\n<p>All these facets form <strong>a jewel of the finest water<\/strong>, indeed <strong>resplendent in the colours of the setting sun<\/strong>. <strong>A most beautiful compound of jazzy lounge music with a soundtrack vibe<\/strong>, as stylish as it is emotionally rich \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a rare and sumptuous thing, at any rate.
