Das Deb\u00fct-Album der deutsch-schwedischen Supergroup \u201e4 Wheel Drive\u201c war 2019 die erfolgreichste Jazzeinspielung in Deutschland. Und auch die Medien geizten nicht mit Lob. \u201eVier erste-Liga-Jazzer mit reiner Spielfreude und Lust an guter Popmusik\u201c, urteilte das ZDF heute-journal \u00fcber das geist- wie genussreiche Zusammenwirken von Posaunist und S\u00e4nger Nils Landgren, Pianist Michael Wollny, Bassist und Cellist Lars Danielsson und Schlagzeuger Wolfgang Haffner. \nMan habe den Anteil von Eigenkompositionen aus der Feder aller Beteiligten im Vergleich zum Erstling etwas erh\u00f6ht, erkl\u00e4rt Danielsson, der mit \u201eJust Another Hour\u201c auch eine feinf\u00fchlig-poppige Ballade zum neuen Album beigesteuert hat. Da mag sich das Mischverh\u00e4ltnis zwischen Interpretationen von Welthits und Originals, die das Deb\u00fct zu so einem gro\u00dfen Erfolg machten, mittlerweile in Richtung 50:50-Hybrid bewegen \u2013 der Treibstoff von 4 Wheel Drive ist jedoch der gleiche geblieben. Es geht darum, aus dem tiefsten Inneren Musik mit Gleichgesinnten zu erschaffen, denen man blind auf dem Fahrersitz vertrauen kann. \u201eEs flie\u00dft einfach\u201c, schw\u00e4rmt Drummer Haffner, \u201ewir sind eine Gruppe enger Freunde, die nichts beweisen will, sondern einfach

Das Album \u201e4 Wheel Drive II\u201c f\u00fcgt der von \u201egegenseitigem Respekt und gegenseitiger Liebe\u201c (Landgren) getragenen Geschichte der Band, deren Geburtsstunde Ende 2017 bei einem Winter-Sonderkonzert des Jazz-Baltica-Festivals schlug, viele neue Augenblicke voller Magie hinzu: Etwa die instrumentale Version des Simon & Garfunkel-Klassikers \u201eSound of Silence\u201c, die etwas geheimnisvoll Nordisches umwabert. Oder die \u00dcbersetzung der bis dato str\u00e4flich ungecovert gebliebenen Genesis-Ballade \u201eHold On My Heart\u201c in den Jazzkontext. Wenn es einen gibt, der eine Phil-Collins-Nummer singen kann, ohne dass es peinlich wird, ist es Nils Landgren. Was auch f\u00fcr Elton Johns \u201eYour Song\u201c oder Paul Simons \u201eStill Crazy After All These Years\u201c gilt. Der Mut, sich in den K\u00f6pfen vieler Menschen so alternativlos eingebrannten Pop-Weisen noch einmal aus einer ganz anderen Perspektive zu n\u00e4hern, zahlt sich voll aus. Weil bei 4 Wheel Drive vier Originale am Werk sind, die man schon am ersten Ton erkennt. Michael Wollny sieht das popul\u00e4re Hit-Material denn auch nicht als B\u00fcrde, sondern ganz im Gegenteil als Befreiung. \u201eSongs, die derart bekannt sind, geben einem die M\u00f6glichkeit, ganz offen f\u00fcr den Moment zu sein\u201c, sagt der Pianist, \u201ein dieser Band erlaubt uns die Songauswahl gro\u00dfe Freiheiten.
