Vestido de Amor <\/strong>(in Liebe gekleidet), das zehnte Studioalbum des Brasilianers Chico Cesar, klingt lebhaft, einfalls-, als auch umfangreich. Es besch\u00c3\u00a4ftigt sich mit dem Thema des Panafrikanismus, diesmal aus der Sicht der Diaspora. Der S\u00c3\u00a4nger und Songwriter hat zwei gro\u00c3\u0178e Pers\u00c3\u00b6nlichkeiten der afrikanischen Musik eingeladen, um \u00e2\u20ac\u017eVestido de Amor\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/strong> zu bereichern: Salif Keita<\/strong> und Ray Lema<\/strong>. Diese Zusammenarbeit ist mehr als nur ein Featuring, sie besiegelt einen wichtigen Parameterwechsel. Lange Zeit versuchte das tropische Amerika an seine afrikanischen Wurzeln anzukn\u00c3\u00bcpfen, die allzu oft geschm\u00c3\u00a4lert, wenn nicht gar ignoriert wurden.<\/p>\n

1996 komponierte Chico Cesar <\/strong>Mama Africa, eine Ode an die afroamerikanische Frau, die alleinerziehende Mutter mit den starken H\u00c3\u00a4nden und dem gro\u00c3\u0178en Herzen. Im Jahr 2022, in dem sich die Frage der kulturellen Aneignung mit aller Sch\u00c3\u00a4rfe stellt, scheint es offensichtlich, dass Afrika bereits in der Vergangenheit kulturelle Str\u00c3\u00b6mungen beeinflusst hat und auch heutzutage noch von kulturellen Ereignissen selber Einfluss nimmt. “Der Panafrikanismus ist heute breiter geworden, und wo auch immer die Diaspora ist, sie muss stolz auf das sein, was sie ist, und sie muss sich das Recht nehmen, bei jeder Gelegenheit aufrecht zu stehen”.<\/p>\n

Chico Cesar liefert also ein vielfarbiges Album. Vom nordestinensischen Forro bis zum jamaikanischen Reggae, von der Rumba aus Zairo bis zum Calypso, von der Kokosnuss der K\u00c3\u00bcstenfischer bis zur Elektrizit\u00c3\u00a4t des urbanen Rocks. Dennoch bleibt \u00e2\u20ac\u017eVestido de Amor\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/strong> vollkommen brasilianisch.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u017eVestido de Amor\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/strong> ist das erste Album von Chico Cesar<\/strong>, das au\u00c3\u0178erhalb Brasiliens entstand und sich mit dieser zeitgen\u00c3\u00b6ssischen Kalibrierung auseinandersetzt. Das in den Ferber Studios<\/strong> in Paris aufgenommene Album ist eine ehrliche und spielerische Bestandsaufnahme einer vielf\u00c3\u00a4ltigen Welt, in der Tanzen immer noch m\u00c3\u00b6glich ist, vor allem, wenn durch die Freude auch Botschaften vermittelt werden, die von Frieden, Br\u00c3\u00bcderlichkeit, aber auch von Kampf handeln.<\/p>\n

Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar<\/strong> der Elfengeist der brasilianischen Musik, mit seinem unvergleichlichen Aussehen und seiner reichen Kreativit\u00c3\u00a4t. Dies best\u00c3\u00a4tigt auch die Vielfalt seines Werks. Es stellt einen Dialog zwischen Tradition und Moderne des brasilianischen, afrikanischen und karibischen Raums her. Es ist die beunruhigende Leichtigkeit, mit der er alle Rhythmen, die unter seine Gitarre fallen, flie\u00c3\u0178end beherrscht. Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar<\/strong> ist ein Mann des Widerstandes, der sich f\u00c3\u00bcr soziale Gerechtigkeit einsetzt. Sowohl in seiner Musik als auch in seinem Handeln vertritt er offensiv seine Werte gegen Rassismus.<\/p>\n

Der Titel und gleichnamige Song seines 5. Albums liest sich wie ein Manifest: Respeitem Meus Cabelos, Brancos<\/strong> (“Respektiert mein Haar, ihr Wei\u00c3\u0178en\u00e2\u20ac\u0153), in Anspielung auf das krause Haar, das der allgemeine brasilianische Rassismus gerne als “schlechtes Haar” bezeichnet. Er stellt sich offen gegen die Machenschaften von Diktatoren, verteidigt \u00c3\u00b6ffentlich unterdr\u00c3\u00bcckte Minderheiten (Indianer (Indigene), Homosexuelle, Afroamerikaner*innen, Frauen, Arme) und engagiert sich f\u00c3\u00bcr den Umweltschutz. Ein Kampf, der in seinen Texten sowohl auf politische als auch auf poetische Weise zum Ausdruck kommt.<\/p>\n

Der ehemalige Journalist, Autor von drei Gedichtb\u00c3\u00a4nden und Liebhaber der feinen Phrase verf\u00c3\u00bcgt \u00c3\u00bcber eine gro\u00c3\u0178artige Gabe, mit Worten zu jonglieren. Er beherrscht die Sprache des Protests mit Intelligenz und Lyrik. Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar ist ein Barde seiner Zeit, und ein zeitloser K\u00c3\u00bcnstler, vor allem ist er ein gro\u00c3\u0178er Musiker. Seine Wurzeln liegen in Catol\u00c3\u00a9 da Rocha, in den Tiefen des Staates Para\u00c3\u00adba im Nordosten Brasiliens, wo Francisco C\u00c3\u00a9sar Gon\u00c3\u00a7alves im Januar 1964 geboren wurde. Seine Kindheit wurde von Musik gepr\u00c3\u00a4gt, wodurch er schon in jungen Jahren komponierte. Vestido de Amor<\/strong>, the tenth studio album by Brazilian singer-songwriter Chico Cesar<\/strong>, digs deeper <\/span>into the subject of Pan-Africanism, this time from the point of view of the diaspora. In 1996, the <\/span>singer-songwriter born in Catol\u00c3\u00a9 do Rocha, in the desert area of Para\u00c3\u00adba State, composed Mama <\/span>Africa, an ode to the black woman, a single mother with dirty hands and a big heart. In 2022, in <\/span>this global society where the question of cultural appropriation is so acute, it seems obvious that<\/span><\/span>

Man of the world, Man of struggle, Man of letters\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar, the elfin genie of Brazilian music, with his incomparable look and copious creativity.<\/span>
\nIt was in Catol\u00c3\u00a9 da Rocha, in the depths of Para\u00c3\u00adba state in the northeast of Brazil that Francisco (in Brazil, Franciscos always end up as Chicos) C\u00c3\u00a9sar Gon\u00c3\u00a7alves was born in January 1964. His childhood was bathed in music and a regional culture that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s as rich as it is compelling. From an early age, Chico composed. He left his home at 16 for the state capital Jo\u00c3\u00a3o Pessoa to pursue studies in journalism, which he financed by working in a bookshop. His first, Aos Vivos (meaning \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcLive\u00e2\u20ac\u2122), which was released in 1995, was just that \u00e2\u20ac\u201c live \u00e2\u20ac\u201c because at the time nobody would invest a kopek in a new album by an unknown artist. So, he recorded one of his gigs, sharing the stage with other artists, including his contemporary Lenine, who guests on two of the tracks. Only the shrewdest listener would ever have recognised the album as the work of a beginner, such are its accomplishments. From the word go, C\u00c3\u00a9sar showed himself to be a brilliant tunesmith, lyricist, instrumentalist and singer. Applauded by the critics, adopted by the mainstream, he entered the realm of the greats at his first attempt. <\/span>(Dominique Dreyfus, <\/span>January 2021.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The next few chapters of his story can be told though collaborations, tours and albums (thirteen at the latest count) on whose posters and credits the great names of Brazilian music are writ large (Chico Buarque, Nana Vasconcelos, Zeca Baleiro, Daniela Mercury, Arrigo Barnab\u00c3\u00a9\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6) as are some international names: Sting, who won the Grammy for best male cover in 2001 with his version of Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar and Ivan Lins\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcSoberana Rosa\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcShe Walks This Earth\u00e2\u20ac\u2122); the Spaniard Luis Pastor (whose album P\u00c3\u00a1salo was produced by C\u00c3\u00a9sar); Lokua Kanza (on the album Beleza Mano in 1997); Ray Lema (on a European tour in 2006); Richard Galliano (on the album Galliano au Br\u00c3\u00a9sil in 2014)\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><\/p>\n

Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar<\/strong>, as they say, is a man of the world. <\/span>Not in a globetrotting socialite sense, but a universal one. All you have to do is look at the diversity of his work. It establishes a dialogue between tradition and modernity and takes us to the four corners of time and of the Brazilian, African, Caribbean space. Not that he delves into the repertoire of other artists \u00e2\u20ac\u201c or at least, not that much. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just the disconcerting ease with which he achieves fluency in all the rhythms that fall under his guitar (in 2018, his album Estado de Poesia won the Brazilian Music prize in the rock, pop, reggae, hip hop and funk categories!). Especially those rhythms that draw him closer to his African, Amerindian and regional roots. <\/span>Maybe because Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar is man of struggle, a man committed to social justice.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In his music, as in his actions (he took several years off from his career to head up the Secretariat of Culture in Para\u00c3\u00adba state) he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s in the thick of all the right struggles. Against racism for a start. The title and eponymous song of his 5th album reads like a manifesto: Respeitem Meus Cabelos, Brancos (a hard to translate pun that can either be read as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcRespect my hair, whiteys\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 or, if you ignore the comma, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcRespect my white hair\u00e2\u20ac\u2122) in reference to the frizzy hair that common Brazilian racism likes to call \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbad hair\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, just as one might say \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbad weed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. Positioning himself openly against the errant machinations of those in power, he publicly defends oppressed minorities (Amerindians, gays, blacks, women, the poor), and is involved in environmental causes\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6a struggle that inhabits his lyrics, both in a political and poetic way.<\/span>
\nBecause Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar is also a man of letters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The former journalist, author of three collections of poetry, lover of the finely-tuned phrase, possesses a superb gift for juggling words. He wields the language of protest with intelligence and lyricism. If you wanted to name a creative precursor it might be Caetano Veloso. Like him, Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar is a bard of his time, and like him, he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also a timeless artist. <\/span>But above all, Chico C\u00c3\u00a9sar is a great musician.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
