Ich umarme meine Seltsamkeiten, wenn man so will\u00e2\u20ac\u0153. \u00c3\u0153ber das Titelst\u00c3\u00bcck \u00e2\u20ac\u017eGhost Song\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 sagt Salvant: \u00e2\u20ac\u017eWas geschieht, wenn die Liebe sich verabschiedet hat, dich verlie\u00c3\u0178, aber deine Gef\u00c3\u00bchle dir wie Geister gebieten, dich weiterhin von dieser Liebe einnehmen zu lassen? Manche Songs erfordern Anstrengung bevor sie zum Vorschein kommen, aber dieses St\u00c3\u00bcck entstand ziemlich schnell. In den vergangenen Jahren musste ich mich dem Tod meiner Gro\u00c3\u0178mutter und des Drummers meiner Band, Lawrence Leathers, stellen.\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u017eGhost Song\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 beginnt und endet jeweils mit einem Sean-n\u00c3\u00b3s-Gesangsst\u00c3\u00bcck, traditionell- irischem Kantus ohne Begleitung, aufgenommen in einer Kirche. Vom ersten St\u00c3\u00bcck leitet Salvant \u00c3\u00bcber in\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 Kate Bushs 1978 ver\u00c3\u00b6ffentlichten Klassiker \u00e2\u20ac\u017eWuthering Heights\u00e2\u20ac\u0153. \u00c3\u0153ber diesen Song sagt Salvant: \u00e2\u20ac\u017e\u00e2\u20ac\u0161Wuthering Heights\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc, das Buch, zielte regelrecht in meine Seele w\u00c3\u00a4hrend der Pandemie, als ich das neue Album aufnahm. Die beste Interpretation des Romans ist dieser Song von Kate Bush.\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u017eDas Lied handelt von der klassischsten aller Geistergeschichten. Nachdem ich mich daf\u00c3\u00bcr entschieden hatte, das Album \u00e2\u20ac\u0161Ghost Song\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc zu nennen, war mir klar, dass eine Geistergeschichte darin platziert werden musste\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, f\u00c3\u00bchrt Salvant weiter aus. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eDann kam mir die Idee, den Song mit dem Sean-n\u00c3\u00b3s \u00e2\u20ac\u0161C\u00c3\u00bairt Bhaile Nua\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc zu verbinden, das eine Br\u00c3\u00bccke zum<\/p>\n<p>Traditional \u00e2\u20ac\u0161Unquiet Grave\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc, dem letzten St\u00c3\u00bcck des Albums, baut. Der Geist verfolgt nicht mich, jetzt verfolge ich ihn &#8211; daf\u00c3\u00bcr steht dieser Erz\u00c3\u00a4hlstrang. Beide St\u00c3\u00bccke entsprechen einander ausgezeichnet, obwohl sie aus unterschiedlichen Zeitr\u00c3\u00a4umen stammen. Ich wollte, dass sich dieses Album wie ein Kreislauf ausnimmt, mit den Sean-n\u00c3\u00b3s-Bez\u00c3\u00bcgen als Anfang und Ende. Insofern lade ich mit dem ersten St\u00c3\u00bcck, aber auch mit dem letzten St\u00c3\u00bcck, und mit dem Song in der Mitte der Platte zum H\u00c3\u00b6ren des Albums ein. In dieser Weise n\u00c3\u00a4here ich mich selbst Alben, wenn ich durch meine Wohngegend spaziere, oder mit dem Flugzeug irgendwohin reise &#8211; ich schalte mein Abspielger\u00c3\u00a4t auf Wiederholung.\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u017eS\u00c3\u00a4mtliche Songs des Albums stehen in spiegelbildlichem Verh\u00c3\u00a4ltnis zueinander. Ich probierte diese eigenartige Symmetrie aus, damit die Songs zusammenpassen, ganz gleich, ob man mit dem H\u00c3\u00b6ren am Ende oder am Anfang des Albums beginnt\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, sagt Salvant. \u00e2\u20ac\u017e\u00e2\u20ac\u0161I Lost My Mind\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc ist der Kern der Matrjoschka. Ich schrieb es inmitten der Pandemie. Es gab N\u00c3\u00a4chte, in denen ich einfach nur schreien wollte. In den Tiefen meiner Seele gab es diesen Teil, der mir sagte: \u00e2\u20ac\u0161Es ist okay, wenn das Material komplett verr\u00c3\u00bcckt klingt, es ist gut, diesem komplett verr\u00c3\u00bcckten Ding einfach zu folgen, und nicht zu f\u00c3\u00bcrchten, dass Leute annehmen k\u00c3\u00b6nnten, ich h\u00c3\u00a4tte meinen Verstand verloren, weil ich daran arbeite.\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u017eAuch die Bands spiegeln einander von oben bis unten in Sachen Instrumentierung &#8211; in allem\u00e2\u20ac\u0153, erkl\u00c3\u00a4rt Salvant. \u00e2\u20ac\u017eDeswegen stehen die Songs in Beziehung zueinander, sie entsprechen sich, sie sind wie zweieiige Zwillinge, einer k\u00c3\u00b6nnte der b\u00c3\u00b6se Zwilling des anderen sein. Ich, als eine der Lebenden, werde von einem Geist besucht. Anschlie\u00c3\u0178end mache ich mich wiederum auf den Weg, den Geist zu besuchen. Ich verfolge und irritiere den Spuk, womit ich ausdr\u00c3\u00bccke: \u00e2\u20ac\u0161Scher dich hinaus und k\u00c3\u00bcmmere dich um deine eigentlichen Aufgaben.\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>\u00c3\u0153ber die klangliche Vielfalt auf \u00e2\u20ac\u017eGhost Song\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 sagt Salvant: \u00e2\u20ac\u017eTextur ist ein wesentliches Merkmal meiner Gesangsform, in einem Song von mir finden sich mannigfache Texturen. Ich werde beinahe von ihnen getrieben. Es kommt mir nicht in den Sinn, in nur einer Textur zu verharren. Die Instrumentierung schafft mir den Raum daf\u00c3\u00bcr, ebenso wie der jeweilige Aufnahmeprozess. Mir gef\u00c3\u00a4llt die Vielfalt, sogar beim Essen. Man mag das Cremige und Weiche und Knusprige gleichzeitig. Warm und kalt.\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>Salvants Live-Auftritte erstrecken sich von sp\u00c3\u00a4rlich besetzten Stimme-Piano-Duetten \u00c3\u00bcber Instrumental-Trios bis hin zu Orchester-Ensembles. Ihr unver\u00c3\u00b6ffentlichtes Werk \u00e2\u20ac\u017eOgresse\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 ist ein ambitionierter, ausgiebig gestalteter Liederzyklus, der auf M\u00c3\u00a4rchenerz\u00c3\u00a4hlungen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert basiert. Darin erforscht sie das Wesen der Freiheit und die Sehns\u00c3\u00bcchte in einer rassifizierten, patriarchalisch dominierten Welt. And the best interpretation of the novel is Kate Bush\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s song.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">She continues, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the most classic ghost story. I decided I wanted to do an album called Ghost Songs, and I knew that one had to be on it. Then I had the idea to mix it in with the sean-n\u00c3\u00b3s \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcC\u00c3\u00bairt Bhaile Nua,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 which binds it to the traditional \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcUnquiet Grave,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 the last track on the album. The ghost is not haunting me; now I am haunting the ghost. They parallel each other so well and they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re such different time periods. I wanted the album to be a circle, with the sean-n\u00c3\u00b3s reference at the beginning and at the end. So it is the first track but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also the last track and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also the middle track, which is how <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">I listen to music, walking around my neighborhood, on a plane, travelling somewhere, putting stuff on repeat.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153All the songs on the album kind of mirror each other. I tried to create this strange symmetry. So as you go in from both ends, the songs are sort of matched together,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Salvant says. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcI Lost my Mind\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is the center of the Russian doll. I wrote that in the middle of the pandemic. There were nights when I wanted to just scream. It was this deeper part of me saying, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s OK if this sounds completely crazy, OK to just go with the completely crazy thing and not worry if people think you have lost your mind for doing it.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The bands also mirror each other from top to bottom. In terms of the instrumentation, everything,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Salvant explains. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why the songs are there in that relationship: they match each other, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re like fraternal twins, or one is the evil twin of the other. I, as the living, am visited by the ghost, and then I go visit the ghost in turn. I am haunting the ghost and annoying the ghost, which is saying, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcGet out of here and go live.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Of the sonic variety on Ghost Song, Salvant says, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Texture is a big part of how I sing, having multiple textures in one song. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s almost a compulsion. I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t allow myself to stay in one texture. The instrumentation creates that but the recording process as well. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s something I like, even when I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m eating. You want the creamy and chewy and crunchy at the same time.
